Alan Berecka

Alan Berecka

Alan Berecka was born and raised in rural Central New York. A scholarship offer from the University of Dallas transplanted him into Texas over forty years ago. For many of those years he earned his keep as a librarian at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. After retiring in 2023, he currently resides in Sinton, Texas with his wife Alice and an ornery rescue dog named Ophelia. Berecka’s poetry is narrative in nature, often full of irony and humor. His work has been described as “poems about what it's like to be human on this earth, where the sacred and the mundane jostle cheek to jowl, poems that will break your heart while making you laugh out loud...” He has authored three chapbooks, and five full collections, the latest of which is A Living Is Not a Life: A Working Title (Black Spruce Press 2021), a finalist in the 2022 Hofer Awards. From 2017-2019 he served as the first poet laureate of Corpus Christi. In 2022 he was a guest of the Lithuanian Writer’s Union and gave readings throughout Lithuania.
