About the Wellness Center

The Wellness Center includes a large fitness area with cardiovascular equipment (bikes, rowers, treadmills, ski machines, elliptical cross trainers, and stair steppers), selectorized and plate-loaded weight equipment, dumbbells and a 1/16 mile walking track. There is a studio with wall to wall mirrors, gymnasium, locker rooms, and an exercise physiology laboratory, as well as an instructional classroom. The facility is supervised by CPR trained staff.

The UofSC Aiken Natatorium has a six lane pool with attached locker room facilities. It is attached to the Student Activities Building.


Member Benefits

All Wellness Center memberships include the Group Fitness Classes and the use of the Natatorium. You can purchase a Natatorium only membership if preferred.

Several membership options are available for affiliates: $240/year, $140/6 months, $75/3 months, or $35/1 month.

Natatorium-Only Membership $150/year or $75/6 month.

Zumba Gold!

Description: Zumba Gold! is a dance based class specifically geared toward the older adult. The movements are choreographed, set to fun music, and laughter is key.

Instructor: Amy Pethaja is a certified Zumba Gold! instructor that infuses fun into every class she teaches. She has been teaching Zumba Gold for over 10 years and loves how it builds community while keeping people  moving their bodies to improve physical and mental health.

The Aiken Mermaids: Synchronized Swimming

Description: Experienced swimmers are invited to join the Aiken Aquatic Arts class (The Aiken Mermaids). Our exercises are set to music and include synchronized swimming drills, stunts and routines. If you are new to synchronized swimming, please come at 10:30 a.m. for extra coaching. This is for women who can swim the length of the Natatorium pool with backstroke, breast stroke and front crawl and are comfortable in deep water. Come and join the fun!

Instructor: Doris B. Hammond, PhD, has been a synchronized swimmer since her high school years in Cincinnati. She was a member of the Cokettes team which was sponsored by the Coca Cola Company. More recently, she directed a synchronized swimming show at Sun City Hilton Head with 45 performers. Here in Aiken, she has developed a synchronized swimming exercise program at the UofSC Aiken Natatorium.

Strength Gold!

Description: Strength Gold is a total body strength class that is geared toward improving the body’s ability to perform daily activities. We need our muscles to be strong, to walk, carry groceries, play with grandchildren and to live our lives to the fullest.

Instructor: Jacob Norton is a certified personal trainer that teaches a strength class geared toward improving overall body function. There will be a class for individuals that have full mobility to sit and stand and also a class for those with some limitations that would need to do most activities seated.

Yoga Gold

Description: Keeping the joints of the body mobile as we age is crucial to decrease the risk of injury. Yoga Gold is focused on improving the body’s mobility while at the same time focusing on breathing and relaxation.

Instructor: Iliana VanPelt has a RYT-200 Certification from Aiken Yoga. She is currently working on her RYT-500 through the Pranakriya Institute of Yoga Arts. Illiana teaches a variety of yoga classes, including (but not limited to) Yoga 101, Vinyasa, Yin, Gentle Stretch, Gentle Flow, and Chair Yoga. Illiana states “I am a yoga ambassador because yoga has truly saved my life and kept me healthy and sane by balancing my breath, mind, and body throughout the most difficult phases of my life.”

Fitness Floor Exercise

Description: This class will introduce exercise equipment on the fitness floor. The focus will be teaching participants how to properly use cardiovascular and strength equipment that are commonly found at exercise facilities. Each week there will be an introduction to new equipment and a workout created for you to follow.
