He earned a PhD in American Literature from Texas Tech University in 2003, an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of South Carolina-Columbia in 1992, and BAs in English and Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988.

Geyer has published nine book-length works of fiction, the latest of which is the short-story cycle Lesser Mountains (Lamar University Press, 2019). A native Texan, Geyer was born in Austin and grew up on a working cattle ranch in Southwest Texas. A lover of the outdoors and an avid runner, he has traveled extensively in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, and North Africa. In his spare time, he likes to paddle rivers, including the many waterways that meander across South Carolina on their way to the sea.
